The Fundraising Body for University of La Verne Debaters

What We're About:

Lordsburg Debate Union is an organization designed to promote public debate on the University of La Verne Campus and in the La Verne Area.  We raise funds to hold public debates and send members of the University of La Verne Debate Squad, which is currently the number two ranked squad in the USA and 14th in the world, to debate in championships in all corners of the globe.

Who We Are:

We are a group of University of La Verne students made up of both those students who will be traveling the world to compete in or adjudicate international debates, and students who are honing their skills for a chance to travel internationally in the future.  Though all of us may not be scheduled to travel in the coming year, there is at least one thing we all have in common: a love of engaging in dialog that empowers and shapes an individual's beliefs and sense of self.

    Our officers are as follows:

Prime Minister:  Brenna Lampson, a former Debate Squad Captain who is majoring in philosophy and speech communications.

Deputy Prime Minister:  Tera Taylor, a senior speech communication major.

Propaganda Minister (Public Relations Officer):  John Patrick, a senior journalism and speech communications major.

Minister of Records:  Michelle McPherson, a senior business major.

Minister of Finance:  Rob Ruiz, a graduate student studying education.

What We're Working Towards:

This year our members will be traveling internationally to Toronto for the CUSID British Parliamentary Championships, to Great Britain for the Oxford Finals, and to Vancouver, B.C. for the Worlds Championship.  Members will also participate in national competitions at Yale, Occidental and Claremont McKenna.

How you can help students achieve:

Lordsburg Debate Union has set out on a mission to ensure that those ULV Students who have a demonstrated the ability to debate competitively or adjudicate competently get a chance to do so on the international circuit.  The University of La Verne is a small, tuition-driven, private campus, so funding can be limited.  While the school does contribute funds to assist students in achieving their debating goals, there is simply not enough to completely fund all our qualifying members. This year we are attempting to raise $10,000.00 to fund competitions.

While we may not be able to send every student to international competition, we can try to raise enough funds to send our best debaters and adjudicators to represent us around the globe.  If you're in the La Verne area, keep an eye out for Lordsburg carwashes, comedy and pizza nights, and other fund raising events.  Or if you'd just like to help students achieve their goals and see the world, donations are always welcome.
